Around 2008, a group of young snowboarders was looking for a way they could sell snowboarding equipment to other snowboarding enthusiasts. While looking for a suitable site, they quickly figured out that there weren't any good online marketplaces available for their needs, or to provide a personalized shopping experience, so they simply made their own platform to do the job.
This platform would soon become one of the most popular e-commerce platforms today. It wasn’t an instant hit, however, and took a few years to take off properly. Today, Shopify hosts over 350,000 active stores which generate almost $30 billion in sales each year. Shopify is not just an e-commerce platform; it is also a website builder which allows merchants to design their very own modern and responsive websites to sell their goods.
